First give credit where credit is due. This is Bon Appetit’s recipe from 1984. They republished it this year, since it has been the most popular recipe they have published ever. I thought it was really pretty, so decided to give it a go. 3 hours in disaster strikes. The ribbons break and there was NO WAY IN HELL those things were going to curl. Not to mention, the picture isn’t nearly as lumpy as mine was. *But* the best part, it was...
Read MoreOur first gingerbread house
We made a gingerbread house yesterday. I threw it away today. 24 hours later, the pound of candy was gone, and mostly eaten by the adults. I had to force the girls into putting ANY of the candy on the house. This may be the saddest looking gingerbread house ever. But who cares? I enjoyed eating the candy. Apparently my husband loves bread pudding. Its odd how almost 5 years of marriage, and I am still learning some of these things. Putting it more into prospective, I never gave him an option of bread pudding. There was no way I would be able to make it without burning down the house. But those days are over, and here I am with some delicious Challah pudding. What a great way to end Hanukkah. Until next year my dear Jewish readers. Challah Pudding 1/2 stick butter 2 cups milk 3...
Read MoreRugelach
A rugelach is a Jewish pastry of Ashkenazic origin (Wikipedia) and is a common Hanukkah dessert. FYI- these taste even better at room temperature the next day. I made 32 of them last night and today they are all gone. For some odd reason, I decided to eat all but one. I threw the last one in the garbage. I was feeling like a gluttonous pig, and for some reason, throwing that last one, meant I had some sort of self control. Rugelach (adapted from Jewish Heritage cookbook) 1 stick...

Over 13 million people will be celebrating Hanukkah this year. I have never once celebrated. Nor have I cooked a traditional Jewish dish or even eaten one for that matter. In my adventures in the kitchen I decided that I would be celebrating Hanukkah with food. I, personally, celebrate everything with food, so why not organize and theme the dinners. So….Shalom and Mazel Tov as I channel my inner baleboste. I personally can’t think of a better...

The kids were sick today. &*$%$%# cold season. Last time we relocated in the middle of season and the entire family had a virus on moving day. That was definitely ranked in the top 3 of sucky days. Today wasn’t even close. But as the kids were sleeping (comatose from the medicine), I looked around. There happened to be 6 bags of Oceanspray dried berries lying around (since they were on sale). The pomegranate was calling my name. I was...

Notice no “adapted from” on this recipe. I have been in the mood to experiment and take some risks in not starting from an original recipe, not having a launching point, or safety net. I totally expected these to come out like a smoldering brick….but, they are pretty good. These aren’t dessert muffins, but a breakfast muffin. They have more of a healthy, whole wheat, oatmeal and gingery taste, which in my mind is a good start to the day. So,...
