1920

That damn Prohibition starts!  Speakeasies begin. Coffee, soft drinks, and ice cream sodas skyrocket in sales.

Broccoli becomes popular due to Italian immigrants in California. Before their cultivation, broccoli was for the rich only.

Iceberg lettuce is all the rage.1929

Wonderbread is born.

La Choy Food Products is born in Detroit.  Sprouts are the first to be canned.

1921

White Castle hamburgers is born in Wichita, Kansas. For 5 cents, anyone can have one of these bite-sized hamburgers.

Kandy Kake is born, and later renamed to Baby Ruth after President Cleveland’s daughter.

Table salt now has potassium iodine to prevent goiter.

The first Eskimo Pie is born

Quaker Oats introduces the first quick-cooking oatmeal.

Betty Crocker is born. Her image was chosen by submissions from female workers at William G. Crocker’s factory.

Sanka Decaffeinated Coffee is born.

1922

Commercial insulin is discovered when two Canadians isolate the hormones from the pancreatic juices of a dog. They use this to save the life of a child dying of diabetes.

Fruit, Garden & Homes is born. It is later renamed Better Homes & Gardens.

1923

Women are finally informed that being overweight, although once considered being healthy, is “now a liability, both physically and esthetically.” ~ Women’s Home Companion

1924

Caesar Cardini, a Mexican restaurant owner comes up with tableside-prepared Caesar salad.

The Popsicle is patented.

1925

Honey Maid Graham Crackers is born.

Minnesota Canning Co. turns to new marketing for their pea that was brought back from Europe. The rename themselves the Green Giant company.

1926

Milk Duds are born.

The Cobb Salad is born in Los Angeles to Bob Cobb. He invented the salad to keep leftovers from going to waste.

The Russian Tea Room is opened in New York for Russian artists, dancers, writers, and musicians.

Canned Ham is born to parent Hormel.

Harry Lender begins making his bagels.

1927

General Electric introduces the first dishwasher.

Pez is born as a mint for the breath of smokers. In 1948, they began targeting children in the US.

Milk is now homogenized.

Stainless steel cutlery is born.

Kool-aid is born in a powdered form. It was originally called Fruit Smack.

The automatic toaster is born.

1928

SLICED BREAD is born!!!!!!!!!!

Drumbstick introduces their ice cream cones.

Reeses peanut butter cups are born.

Butterfinger is born.

Peter Pan peanut butter is born.

Rice Krispies are born.

Velveeta Cheese is born.

1929

Clarence Birdseye decides to freeze vegetables.

Ruby Red grapefruit is discovered on a farm in McAllen, Texas.

Nestle buys Peter’s Chocolate, who made the world’s first milk chocolate using Nestle condensed milk.

Oscar Meyer Wieners start using yellow bands for identification.

7-up is born.

Gerber starts making baby food.

The stock markets crashes.
